Lettuce
Lettuce is a relatively new crop for us at Kirby's; we've been growing it for about five years now. We love having it right behind the market so we can go out to pick a head or two whenever we need one - super fresh, tender, and sweet.
Season: Lettuce can be grown from May-October but it does best in the cooler months. You can find lettuce at the market just about anytime, depending on when it was planted. Call for availability.
Storage:
Rinse lettuce in cool water, wrap loosely in a plastic bag, and store in your crisper drawer. Wash thoroughly before using.
Preparation:
- Lettuce is most commonly used as the main ingredient in salads, but it's also very popular as a wrap, especially for those on a gluten-free diet.
- Lettuce is very common on sandwiches and burgers (in case you never noticed).
- Lettuce can be used as an ingredient in soups.
Nutrition:
Iceberg, leaf lettuce, and Romaine are all fat-free, low in sodium, cholesterol-free and low in calories. Romaine and other leaf lettuces are high in vitamin A are good sources of folate.
