Greenhouse
Our greenhouses were built in 1993 and we’ve been going strong ever since! May and June are the season for bedding plants. The greenhouse is full of annuals in trays, pots and hanging baskets. We also grow thousands of gorgeous mums in the fall, in a range of colors. The greenhouse is full once again in December, but this time with poinsettias. A carpet of red, white and pink is ready for the holiday season.
Our perennial area is packed with plants from May until October. You will find varieties perfect for the beginner, or the connoisseur looking for something new and unusual.
Bagged Goods Give your gardens a clean, finished look while helping the soil retain moisture with mulch. We carry six types of mulch as well as two types of compost, peat moss, potting soil, and top soil to amend the earth in your garden.
Integrated Pest Management For several years now Kirby’s has implemented an integrated pest management system, or IPM, in greenhouse and field. A greenhouse is an enclosed ecosystem, complete with pests. There are all sorts of things to deal with from fungus to mold, and a variety of insects. As you walk through the greenhouse you may notice baskets of tall green grass here and there. These are plantings of oats, home to black aphids known as Cherry Oat Wheat Aphid, a parasitic insect that feeds only on the oats and leaves all of the other plants alone. The aphids in turn, are a food source for parasitic wasps that attack another type of aphid that is very damaging to decorative plants. We’ve seen a significant decrease in pests with this new program, making pesticide applications much less frequent.
